Coroner releases name of driver killed in single-vehicle wreck near S.C. 544

The Horry County Coroner’s Office has named the driver killed in a single-vehicle crash near S.C. 544 on Thursday night.

Joseph Mansfield, 80, of the Myrtle Beach area, died in the crash, which was caused by a “medical event,” said Horry County Coroner Robert Edge.

Mansfield was driving a Volkswagen Passat east on Big Block Road about 8 p.m. when the vehicle went off the road near S.C. 544 and hit a ditch, said Cpl. Matt Southern with South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Southern said. EMS arrived and took the victim to the hospital, where he later died, Southern said.
